School of Law Establishes Maritime Centre/FishForce Academy

The School of Law has established and operationalized the Maritime Centre/FishForce Academy, an evolving Centre of excellence in the School that is already attracting significant interest among students, staff, external stakeholders and partners. The Centre, which is headed by Prof. Paul Musili Wambua with the assistance of Dr. Akunga Momanyi, has academic faculty drawn from Parklands, Kisumu and Mombasa campuses.

The Women’s Economic Forum 2021: Reshaping Kenya’s economy by tapping into women’s economic potential

The inaugural women’s economic forum took place on 24th and 25th February 2021 and sought to advance the empowerment of women through panel discussions, networking and keynote addresses from high-ranking government officials, development partners and industry leaders. This year’s forum tackled six thematic areas including Agribusiness, Manufacturing and Value Addition, Financial Access, Technology and Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Tax and Policy Regimens.

Desert Locust situation in Kenya

Desert Locust upsurge of 2019/2021 affected many countries in The Horn of Africa. The first wave arrived in Kenya in December 2019. By July 2020, approximately 9.4% and 6.3% of cropland and pastureland had been affected respectively. The second wave arrived in November 2020. These swarms crossed into Kenya from Ethioipa and Somalia. Swarms from Ethiopia crossed through Mandera and Marsabit, while swarms from Somalia crossed through Mandera, Wajir and to a small extent through Garissa. This influx peaked in mid-January and began to reduce.

Visiting Professors at UoN School of Law

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Atieno Mboya Samandari of Emory University School of Law (Atlanta, USA) has joined us as a Fulbright fellow. The Fulbright Fellowship that she has secured will enable her to carry out teaching and research in the areas of environmental law, human rights law, gender and water law until July of this year. During this time, she will also facilitate a faculty seminar on law and vulnerability and details of this will be circulated later. 

VIRTUAL OPEN DAY 2021

The University of Nairobi shall hold its 10th Open day on 18th -19th February 2021. The Open day provides the University community with the opportunity to showcase and market its programmes.

 

The theme for this year's Open Day is SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES FOR THE EMERGING TRENDS. 

 

UoN receives Donation worth Kshs. 20M

The University of Nairobi (UoN) College of Health Sciences (CHS) is among three public health institutions that has benefited from a donation of medical equipment from the Republic of Hungary and the Republic of Slovenia.

The assorted medical equipment worth Kshs. 20M  was officially handed over to CHS in a ceremony that was held on 12th February, 2021. 

UoN Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama was represented at the event by Prof. Julius Ogengó, Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs.

WEE Hub sets a 5-year Agenda

The UoN Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) hub researchers held a meeting on Wednesday 10th Feb 2021 with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Senior Program Officer-Gender data, Measurement and Evaluation, Ms Diva Dhar. During this meeting, the WEE Hub shared at length the five-year program in terms of the research agenda and which included projects, methodologies, policies for influence among others. 

The University of Nairobi continues to rank Top Regionally

Over the years, the University of Nairobi has been ranked among the top universities in Africa and the world.

On whichever platform be it Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking or Webometrics that has been consistently releasing results, the University of Nairobi has continued to stay in the top 10% bracket.

Recently, the Webometrics ranking released in January 2021 placed the UoN at Position 1 in Kenya and East Africa, Position 13 in Africa, and 1052 in a total of over 30,000 universities ranked globally.

Internal Audit department emerges the best in Central Administration Performance 2019/2020

In Central Administration the Internal Audit took the first position in Performance 2019/2020 while Open Distance and E-Learning and Graduate School took 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.

The Ag Deputy Vice Chancellor, Finance Planning and Development (DVCFPD), Prof. Margaret Hutchison observed that the PC has helped the University to plan and work in one direction, measure the results and it has also improved efficiency in service delivery.
