City-wide Tree Planting Exercise

Tree seedlings

They say that little strokes feel big oaks.

When the Central Committee on National Cohesion and Values mooted a tree planting exercise, little did the organising committee believe that it would morph into a university wide exercise.

The Tree Planting, scheduled for  Tuesday May 18, 2021, has garnered support  from the Equity Bank Group who are supplying 5,000 seedlings , and the Kenya Forestry Services, who are providing the  technics for tree planting including species selection and placement.

The Tree Planting exercise has been elevated to a higher level as three government ministries: Education, Environment and Interior and coordination of National Government, have indicated representation at the event. The theme of the tree planting exercise “UoN @50, Partnering in afforestation beyond the Covid pandemic, is expected to raise Community awareness towards tree planting and taking advantage of every drop of rain.  By planting tree cover, the University will be contributing to Green spaces in the CBD; places that can benefit people even  when there is a pandemic -thus changing the way that the people of Nairobi enjoy and perceive green spaces.

The tree planting exercise will be carried out in seven sites simultaneously: The main event will be at Upper Kabete Campus, while other sites include SWA Head quarters, Kenya Science Campus, The University property at Kasarani, Chiromo, Kenyatta, School of Law and School of Business. There is indication that Kisumu and Mombasa Campuses are enjoined in the exercise and will also plant ornamental shrubs in pots to commemorate the occasion.
