The Vice-chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama has welcomed 324 students to the Koitaleel Samoei University College, a constituent college of the University of Nairobi. Prof. Kiama congratulated and welcomed the freshmen admitted to the college for the academic year 2021/2022 in his address on October 8, 2021.
“Like the rest of the students admitted to the University of Nairobi, you are part and parcel of the big family and bear the brand of a world-class University,” said Prof. Kiama.
The Vice-chancellor emphasized the importance of hard work.
“You will soon realize, that the hard work towards the realization of your dreams has just began. You must with immediate effect transition to an independent and focused adult who is responsible for his actions. You must as a mater urgency learn to study on your own and learn to solve your own problems and other people’s problems,” advised the VC.
The new students were urged to take advantage of the services and opportunities offered at the college.
“The University College has invested resources for both indoor and outdoor games to produce holistic students. As highlighted during orientation you will be engaged in many activities that are geared towards unpacking your potential in sports and academia,” he said. “Engage in serious discourse and intellectual arguments in the university corridors and lecture rooms. The students were advised to make use of the library resources and the office of the Dean of Students in addition to frequently liaising with the academic members of staff.”
The University College currently has a staff compliment of 92. Of this staff, 25 are academic staff, while 67 are non-academic.
“Learning in the University should be full of fun and experiential. Even through the college is a place for fun and letting loose, do not forget the purpose why you are here – which is to learn, get a good education and to go out in the world with a valuable degree to serve,” advised Prof. Kiama. “University life has a lot of freedom that requires one to have self-discipline; especially in academic matters. You will meet many friends, but avoid bad company; truancy or engaging in risky adventures that can ruin your life. You have ‘one life’ and you simply can’t afford to gamble with it.”
With the admission of the 324 students, the total population of the University College currently stands at 647 students from the initial 67 students in the academic year 2019/2021 when the first cohort reported.
“This growth is phenomenal and an assurance that the future is bright. It also gives you visibility and a stronger voice to engage constructively. When the history of this university will be written some of you will have some pages in their honour,” added the VC.
