Tax Expert weighs in on Fiscal Systems

The committee on fiscal studies (CFS) hosted tax talk on Wednesday November 3, 2021 to explore the linkages between debt international financial obligations and human rights.

The speaker for the day was Prof. Attiya Waris, UoN Director Research, presented a report to the General Assembly late last month on debt architecture. Prof. Waris noted that we have to rethink the debt architecture.

Experts debunk stigma around mental health

At the University of Nairobi’s Mental Health Awareness day celebrations held on Wednesday November 3, 2021, pertinent issues on mental health were discussed.

The day was marked in a bid to provide much needed insight given the upsurge in cases of illnesses such as depression, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia. It was important to debunk the stigma surrounding mental health issues in Kenya and provide information that would be integral in identifying early warning signs of mental health.

200 students to travel to Israel for advance agricultural training

A record 200 students drawn from five higher education institutions in Kenya are set to travel to Israel for an 11-month Advanced Agricultural Training at the Arava International Centre for Agriculture Training (AICAT). 50 of the students are from the University of Nairobi.

Since 2016, when President Uhuru Kenyatta signed an MoU between Kenya and the State of Israel, Kenya has sent over 440 Agricultural students to the Arava International Centre for Agricultural Training (AICAT) to study an Advanced Diploma in Agriculture and Agribusiness.

Centre of excellence for sustainable operations in resource management and food supply to be established

Plans are underway to establish the African Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Operations in Resource Management and Food Supply, which is part of the partnership between the University of Nairobi and Kühne Foundation.

The partnership framework stipulates that business courses in logistics and operations management will be developed by working with faculty members from the University of Nairobi (UoN) and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), thanks to the funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Global leaders call for fair deal for Africa at COP26

Global leaders have called for a fair deal for Africa at the COP26 conference in Glasgow. This was the clarion call by the leaders, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, at the launch of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) “State and Trends in Adaptation in Africa Report 2021 – How Adaptation Can Make Africa Safer, Greener and More Prosperous in a Warming World” (STA21).

From the Dark Wood to Paradise: Dante Alighieri at UoN

The University of Nairobi’s Department of Linguistics, Languages and Literature, the Italian Embassy and the Italian cultural institute collaborated on a conference dubbed "From the Dark Wood to Paradise: Dante Alighieri at the University of Nairobi."

The initiative was part of the "Week of the Italian Language in the World" with the objective of introducing Dante Alighieri and his poetics to the students of the Faculty of Arts.

Inaugural UoN International Students Day

The University of Nairobi held its first ever International Students day themed, ‘Cultural developments and interactions.’

The international students day was  highly significant given that UoN is home to around 2,000 international students representing nationalities across the global most of which come from neighbouring countries like Somalia, Southern Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania.
