UoN – UNESCO partnership to empower the youth

UNESCO and the Swiss Development Corporation are working on a project that will empower a network of universities across Africa. Seven Kenyan Universities including the University of Nairobi will be engaged in the initial phase of this collaboration that will empower the youth. The launch date of this project is scheduled for September 2021.

Executive Deans appointed to head Faculties

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama has, in his live address to the University community, named the executive deans as follows:

Report on Inequality Trends and Diagnostics in Kenya 2020 released

A report that presents a comprehensive analysis of multidimensional inequality in Kenya has been released.

The report dubbed ‘Inequality Trends and Diagnostics in Kenya 2020,’ presents and interprets results from inequality analyses and measurements based on per capita household expenditure, assets, labour market earnings and access to labour market, to education and health and other basic services.

UoN Council outlines radical institutional reforms

The University of Nairobi Council has outlined radical and unprecedented governance reforms including abolishment of offices, merger of functions and creation of new functions.

In a briefing to the media and UoN community, the Chairperson of Council, Prof. Julia Ojiambo announced that various offices have been abolished; functions merged and that new functional positions aligned to the core mandate of the university have been created.

Martha Koome is the new Chief Justice

Justice Martha Koome has been appointed Chief Justice by President Uhuru Kenyatta following the National Assembly's approval. Justice Koome is the first woman in Kenya's history to hold the position.

As per to the gazette notice dated May 19, 2021, Justice Koome will head the Judiciary for a non-renewable 10-year term, succeeding David Maraga who retired in January this year.

7,000 trees planted on UoN grounds

The University of Nairobi in partnership with the Equity Group Foundation and the Kenya Forest Service facilitated a community tree planting exercise at the University of Nairobi’s Upper Kabete Campus on Tuesday May 18th, 2021.

Equity Group Foundation donated about 7,000 trees which were planted in identified grounds at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Services and the Wangari Maathai Institute. In light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, tree planting is now viewed as a necessary exercise to promote the production of oxygen.

City-wide Tree Planting Exercise

They say that little strokes feel big oaks.

When the Central Committee on National Cohesion and Values mooted a tree planting exercise, little did the organising committee believe that it would morph into a university wide exercise.

The Tree Planting, scheduled for  Tuesday May 18, 2021, has garnered support  from the Equity Bank Group who are supplying 5,000 seedlings , and the Kenya Forestry Services, who are providing the  technics for tree planting including species selection and placement.

The Chief Internal Auditor Mr. Kenneth Gitau with Mr. Samuel Karanja an audit staff joined Management and Partners in Tree planting exercise in  Mathai Intitute in College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS) during the tree planting exercise on Tuesday,18 May 2021.
