UoN Students to Participate in Open University-UK Research Project

Five students from University of Nairobi, Kenya, starting from March 2021 will be participating in a research project organized by the Open  University-UK  (approved by the OU Human Research Ethics Committee - reference number: HREC/3832)  which aims to advance the understanding of how COVID-19 is affecting inclusive higher education in Low-and-Middle Income Countries.

Joseph Suhudu, Fourth year who Redesigned Students' Management Information System

Please introduce yourself? My name is Joseph Suhudu. I am a fourth year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electric and Information Engineering.

Field of study and motivation behind it? Growing up, I was always fascinated by the technology and how it works.  For example, why a radio can talk to me and why I cannot talk back to it and what makes it do what it does and why can’t it do what I want it to do. I wanted to understand the systems and I figured out that Electrical and Information Engineering was the best way to do that.

Abundant Karanja Innovates Passenger Overload Detector

Abundant Karanja, a first year student studying Urban Planning at the University of Nairobi, was among the students who presented his innovation at the UoN Talent day on Friday March 12, 2021. He had a one-on-one chat with Corporate Affairs office and this is what he had to say.

UoN Student wins a Continental Research Grant

Ms Caroline Kerichu,  a student in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies pursuing MA- Biodiversity and Natural Resources Management Programme, has successfully applied and won a field research grant from Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) Africa section for her Masters research work titled “Assessing the Management of Biodiversity in Kenyan Gazetted Forest Ecosystems: Case of Eburu and Masai Mau Forests’’.

AWSC Presents a Gender-Based Approach Written Memorandum for the Building Bridges Initiative Bill, 2020

The African Women Studies Centre (AWSC) presented a public participation and memorandum submission for The Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020 as a matter under consideration before the Joint Committee of the National Assembly and the Senate. AWSC was represented by Dr. Agnes Meroka, Ms. Mary Wambui, Ms. Caroline Nyakinyua, and Mr. Musyoki Peter.

These are the sentiments that were echoed at the International Women’s Day webinar, ‘When Women Lead’ that was organized by Coca-cola on Tuesday, March 16, 2021.

The webinar that was moderated by Media personality, Victoria Rubadiri was themed; ‘Emerging stronger for an inclusive world’ brought together female leaders from government, private sector and academia to deliberate on the challenges that women face in the workplace, business, and the different sectors of the economy.

Restructuring of Internal Audit and Establishment of Examination Office

The restructuring of the Internal Audit Department was guided by the Public Finance
Management Act Regulation 162(2). In addition, these was also guided by the Chancellor’s
Visitation Panel whereby in the committee report dated August 2018, that Internal Audit was
previously dedicating a lot of time on pre-audit of documents, which occupied on average 94%
of the Internal Audit working hours.

Inaugural UoN Talent Day

For the first time ever, the University of Nairobi held a students and staff Talent Day. The event saw over 500 students gather in Taifa Hall.

The talent day was a culmination of three days of auditions of the various talents in different categories.  The best were picked to showcase their talents and innovations while others came to cheer and celebrate their peers during the performances. The Talents were categorized as music, poetry, narrations, ICT, Engineering innovations and Art.
